Eggnob On Steam

Posted: 06 November, 2026

Well, Valve bounced the Eggnob page because of my "comedy" reviews, which was a simple enough fix, meaning Eggnob is now officially on Steam!

Flex those fingers, reader, and wishlist Eggnob here!

Web Demo Performance Greatly Improved

The web demo's always been a little disappointing, perf-wise, which I put down to "the browser", but... It turns out that if you're a dumb-ass, it's trivially easy to slip SDL into a mode where it's busy-waits its frame pacing, instead of using the vsync.

Games in the browser don't run in their own loop, they register a function which the browser calls once per display refresh. That should give vsync for free, and it's the only frame limiter the game actually needs. But. The EH500 also asks SDL for vsync, which gets deferred because the browser loop doesn't exist at the point of engine init. SDL then checks if the call worked -- it didn't, because it's deferred -- so SDL concludes vsync is unsupported and then simulates 60hz by spinning for 15ms (Eggnob's entire game loop is < 1ms).

The fix?

#ifdef EH500_WEB
        emscripten_set_main_loop_timing(EM_TIMING_RAF, 1);
#endif
        SDL_SetRenderVSync(s_pRenderer, 1);

For. Fucks. Sake.

So yeah, I've fixed that, and the browser's main thread is back down to <1% utilisation.

You can give it a whirl -- Firefox isn't exactly silky smooth, but Chrome's vastly improved. Force refresh, both browsers seem to be incredibly reticent about downloading wasm stuff again, for whatever reason.

PC Demo Incoming

I've created a page for a demo on Steam, but I've not put it live just yet. I'm debating whether to wait for the music to be finalised, or push it out early without any.

I'll keep you posted.

Anyway, gis a wishlist, hammer the demo, etc. etc.

Musings, random thoughts, work in progress screenshots, and occasional swears at Unreal Engine's lack of documentation -- this is a rare insight into what happens when a supposedly professional game developer plans very little up-front, and instead follows where the jokes lead them.
